菱仁 말왐(마름) (능인)

  1. 性平一云冷, 味甘, 無毒.

    Its nature is neutral, though some say cold. The taste is sweet and it has no toxicity.

  2. 主安中. 補五藏.

    It calms the middle burner and nourishes the five viscera.

  3. 生水中, 葉浮水上, 其花黃白色.

    It grows in water with leaves floating on the surface, and its flowers are yellowish-white.

  4. 實有二種, 一者四角, 一者兩角.

    There are two kinds of fruit—one with four horns and another with two horns.

  5. 水果中, 此物最冷, 不可多食.

    Among aquatic fruits this one is the coldest, so it should not be eaten in large amounts.

  6. 令人腹脹, 飮薑酒, 卽消.

    It can cause bloating, but drinking ginger wine quickly relieves it.

  7. 煮熟, 取仁作粉, 極白滑, 宜人.

    When boiled until soft, the kernel can be ground into a flour that is exceptionally white and smooth, agreeable to the body.

  8. 一名芰實. 《本草》

    It is also called gisil (jiqi), as recorded in the Bencao.

  9. 菱芡皆水物, 菱寒而芡煖者,

    Water caltrop and fox-nut both grow in water, yet caltrop is cold while fox-nut is warm—and there is a reason.

  10. 菱花開背日, 芡花開向日故也. 《入門》

    The caltrop's flower opens away from the sun while the fox-nut's opens toward it, as noted in the Ipmun.
