核 Yongan Ssi (용안 씨)
Seed (核)
The character 核 (haek) means "seed" or "pit." This is a sub-entry to the preceding longan entry, referring to the seed of the longan fruit itself. It is a round, black seed set in the very center of the flesh, with a glossy surface as if coated in lacquer. The fruit's name — "dragon's eye" (longan, 龍眼) — comes from the look of this dark seed showing through the translucent white flesh around it.
Unlike most entries in the Dongui Bogam, this one records no nature and flavor (the warming-or-cooling quality and taste by which traditional Korean medicine classifies every substance) and no associated organs. The text gives only a single brief line on its use: the seed is burned, and the smoke is directed at the nose.
