Saengjo is the jujube taken fresh, before drying. Jujubes were normally sun-dried for keeping, and Donguibogam's fruit section separated the raw fruit from the steamed or boiled one, cautioning against eating too much of it. The kernel inside the pit got an entry of its own.

  1. 味甘辛. 多食令人腹脹, 羸瘦, 生寒熱.

    Its taste is sweet and pungent. Eaten in quantity it distends the belly, wastes the body thin, and gives rise to chills and fever.

    HomiclubSaengjo is the fresh, undried jujube. Just off the tree it is crisp like an apple and pale red; drying wrinkles the skin and turns it a deep chestnut brown.

  2. 蒸煮食, 則補腸胃, 肥中益氣, 生食則腹脹注泄. 《本草》

    Steamed or boiled and eaten it supplements the intestines and stomach, fattens the middle, and augments qi; eaten raw it distends the belly and brings on pouring diarrhea. 《Boncho (本草)》
