Original, read line by line 東醫寶鑑 · Tangaek — Decoctions vol. 2

Its nature is cold and its taste is bitter — a cooling herb that clears heat and quenches thirst.

It lightens the body and reduces drowsiness, leaving the mind clearer and more alert.

It harmonizes the twelve meridians, balancing the flow of qi and blood throughout the body.

It benefits the five viscera, supporting the liver, heart, spleen, lungs, and kidneys alike.

It treats jaundice by clearing damp-heat accumulated in the liver, easing the yellow tint of skin and eyes.

Kugŏ is simply yagŏ — the wild lettuce that grows freely in the fields.

It is also called p'yŏn'gŏ, a name drawn from its narrow, elongated leaves.

Though cold in nature, it greatly benefits people and may be eaten regularly over a long time, says the Bencao.

  9. Now we turn to the root, used as a separate medicinal part from the leaves.

The root chiefly treats red and white dysentery as well as steaming-bone fever, easing bloody or mucous diarrhea and the deep low-grade heat felt within the bones, according to the Bencao.
