甘苔 Gamtae Green Laver

Related Crop · Gamtae Green Laver →

Gamtae is a green seaweed of the sea lettuce group, also written cheongtae, which the text says was spread and dried in sheets like jerky. The same name now attaches to a quite different brown alga, so the two are easily confused. The passage runs on into nokgakchae, taken to be green sea fingers.

  3. 一名靑苔. 生海中, 可作脯食之. 《本草》

It is also called cheongtae (靑苔). It grows in the sea and can be made into dried sheets and eaten. 《Boncho (本草)》

HomiclubSpreading it to dry like jerky matches the way parae and gamtae sheets are still pressed. The name gamtae, however, is also applied to a quite different brown alga of Jeju waters, which invites confusion.
