Songi is the pine mushroom, pushing up from the ground beneath old pines. Its heavy resinous scent has always kept the price high; it appears for a few autumn weeks and still resists cultivation. The Donguibogam said it borrowed the pine's breath and ranked it first among tree mushrooms.

性平, 味甘, 無毒.
Its nature is neutral, its taste is sweet, and it is non-toxic.
HomiclubSongi grows entwined with the fine roots of living pines. For that reason it still resists cultivation, and only wild autumn flushes come to market.

Its taste is exceedingly fragrant and fine, and it carries the breath of pine.

生山中古松樹下, 假松氣而生, 木茸中第一也. 《俗方》
It grows beneath old pines in the mountains, arising by borrowing the pine's qi, and is first among the tree fungi. 《Sokbang (俗方)》
Homiclub'Arising by borrowing the pine's qi' is an old way of describing the partnership between the fungus and pine roots. It is also why particular songi grounds on a mountain were guarded and handed down through generations.
