Sunmu Ssi (순무 씨)

Turnip seeds are set the spring after sowing, when the plant sends up a flower stalk; the seeds sit in neat rows inside slender pods. Each is a round grain about 2 millimeters across with a reddish-brown coat, closely resembling the seeds of napa cabbage or radish. The Dongui Bogam notes how the seeds were prepared for use: they were steamed and then dried in the sun — a traditional way of processing medicinal ingredients before storage. Today, turnip seeds are mostly just saved as seed stock for the following year's planting.
