Haejo is the brown seaweed of the sargassum group; the Dongui Bogam gives its old Korean name as mal. The mojaban that goes into Jeju's momguk belongs to the same group. The book says it is gathered from the sea and dried in the sun.

性寒, 味苦醎, 無毒一云小毒.
Its nature is cold and its taste bitter and salty; it is non-toxic, though one account calls it slightly toxic.
HomiclubHaejo is gulfweed, a brown seaweed of the Sargassum group. Its old Korean name is mal, and the mom that goes into Jeju's momguk belongs here. Small air bladders along its branches keep it afloat.

主癭瘤, 結核, 疝氣下墜, 核腫疼痛. 下十二水腫, 利小便.
It governs yeongnyu (癭瘤, goiter and lumps), gyeolhaek (結核, scrofulous nodules), san qi (疝氣) bearing down, and painful swollen nodules. It reduces the twelve kinds of water swelling and promotes urination.

HomiclubThe seventh day of the seventh lunar month falls in high summer. Gulfweed grows through winter and spring, so at that season it was also collected as drift cast up on the shore and dried.
