水蓼 엿귀 (수료)

  1. 性冷, 味辛, 無毒.

    성랭, 미신, 무독.

    Its nature is cold, its taste pungent, and it is non-toxic. The cold property cools heat in the body while the pungent flavor disperses stagnation.

  2. 主蛇毒及脚氣腫.

    주사독급각기종.

    It is mainly used to counter snake venom and to relieve swelling caused by beriberi in the legs. Country folk long relied on it as a first response for snakebites and swollen legs.

  3. 葉似蓼, 莖赤.

    엽사료, 경적.

    Its leaves resemble those of common smartweed, and its stem takes on a reddish hue. Belonging to the smartweed family, it looks like a close cousin but is distinguished by the red tone of its stem.

  4. 生淺水中, 其葉大於家蓼. 《本草》

    생천수중, 기엽대어가료. 《본초》

    It grows in shallow waters, and its leaves are larger than those of the common household smartweed. A wetland plant, it favors ankle-deep waters such as rice paddy edges and ditches. (Bencao)

  6. 治瘰癧結核. 《本草》

    치나력결핵. 《본초》

    The seeds treat scrofula and hard lymphatic nodules. They were gathered separately to dissolve the firm swellings that form along the neck and armpits. (Bencao)
