  1. 性平一云冷, 味辛酸, 有大毒.

    Its nature is neutral, though some say cold. Its flavor is pungent and sour, and it carries strong toxicity.

  2. 瀉十種十病, 喉痺不通.

    It purges ten kinds of edema and relieves throat obstruction that blocks breathing.

  3. 下蠱毒, 墮胎, 除癰腫, 殺鬼精物, 付惡瘡, 墮胎, 通利大小腸.

    It expels gu-poison, induces miscarriage, dissolves abscesses, and dispels malevolent spirits. It is applied to malignant sores and frees the bowels and bladder.

  4. 在處有之. 有赤白二種.

    It grows everywhere, and there are two kinds: red and white.

  5. 白者入藥用, 赤者甚有毒, 見鬼神, 但貼腫外用.

    The white kind is taken internally as medicine, while the red kind is so toxic that it brings hallucinations, so it is only applied externally to swellings.

  6. 若服則傷人, 痢血不已而死.

    If swallowed by mistake, it injures the body and causes unceasing bloody diarrhea that can prove fatal.

  7. 一名章柳根, 一名章陸, 赤花者根赤, 白花者根白.

    It is also called jangnyugeun or jangnyuk; red-flowered plants have red roots and white-flowered ones have white roots.

  8. 二月八月採根, 暴乾.

    The roots are dug in the second and eighth months and dried thoroughly in the sun.

  9. 如人形者有神. 《本草》

    Roots shaped like a human figure are considered to hold spiritual power. (Bencao)

  10. 銅刀刮去皮薄切, 水浸三日,

    Scrape off the skin with a copper knife, slice it thin, and soak in water for three days.

  11. 取出和菉豆蒸半日, 去豆曬乾或焙乾. 《入門》

    Then steam it together with mung beans for half a day, discard the beans, and dry it in the sun or over gentle heat. (Ipmun)
