卷柏 Butyeoson (부텨손)

Gwonbaek is bucheoson, a spikemoss that clings to bare rock in clumps. Its finely divided fronds curl inward like a clenched fist or a chicken's foot, which gives it the name, and it bears neither flower nor seed. Harvested in summer, it was dried in shade.

Original, read line by line 東醫寶鑑 · Tangaek — Decoctions vol. 2

  4. 生山中, 叢生石上. 苗似柏葉而細碎, 拳屈如雞足, 靑黃色, 無花子.

HomiclubWhen bucheoson dries out its fronds curl inward into a fist-like ball, and when rain comes they open flat again. It is known for this cycle of drying and unfurling, and the text's "curled like a clenched fist" describes exactly that state.

  5. 五月七月採, 陰乾. 去下近石有沙土處, 用之. 《本草》

Gather it in the fifth and seventh months and dry it in the shade. Remove the lower part that touched the rock and carries sand and soil, and then use it. 《Boncho (本草)》
