血竭 Giringal (기린갈)

1. 主一切惡瘡疥癬. 療金瘡, 止血定痛生肌.

   It chiefly governs every sort of malign sore, scabies, and ringworm. It addresses wounds from blades, stanches blood, settles pain, and brings flesh forth.

   HomiclubHyeolgal is the hardened lump of red resin that seeps from a tree, known in the West as dragon's blood. The best-known source is the red resin scraped from the fruit of a Southeast Asian rattan palm, and today it goes into varnish, wood stain, and red pigment.

2. 但性急, 不可多用, 反能引膿.

   But its nature is hasty, so it must not be used in quantity, for it can on the contrary draw pus.

3. 一名麒麟竭, 乃麒麟樹之津液結成, 色紅.

   It is also called girin'gal (麒麟竭), formed from the congealed sap of the girin tree, and its color is red.

4. 凡使味微醎甘, 作梔子氣, 嚼之不爛如蠟者, 佳.

   When using it, the good sort is faintly salty and sweet in taste, gives off the scent of gardenia, and does not crumble when chewed, being like wax.

5. 味醎甚, 作腥氣者, 非也. 另硏, 入藥用. 《入門》

   That which is intensely salty and gives off a fishy smell is not the true kind. Grind it separately and put it into medicine for use. 《Immun (入門)》
