Bangpung Ip (방풍 잎)

The leaf of the bangpung plant (siler). In the Dongui Bogam, this leaf does not stand as an entry of its own: the text places the leaf, flower, and seed side by side beneath the main entry for the bangpung root, recording separately each part of the single plant that was put to use.

Bangpung is a perennial herb of the carrot family (Apiaceae). Its leaves are feather-shaped and finely divided into narrow segments, and each leaf base wraps around the stem where it attaches. This is the very leaf that still appears on Korean tables today as bangpung-namul, a seasoned vegetable dish.
