赤箭 Tyeonmat Sak (텬맛 삭)

1. 性溫, 味辛, 無毒.

   Its nature is warm, its taste pungent, and it is non-toxic.

   HomiclubJeokjeon is the shoot of cheonma. Cheonma is a perennial orchid with neither leaves nor chlorophyll, living entangled with honey fungus; its underground tuber appears separately under the name cheonma (天麻).

2. 殺鬼精物, 蠱毒惡氣, 消癰腫, 治疝.

   It slays specters and sprites, godok (蠱毒, worm toxin), and malign qi, disperses abscess swelling, and treats hernial disorder.

3. 生山野, 卽天麻苗也. 其苗獨莖如箭簳, 葉生其端, 簳葉俱赤, 故號爲赤箭.

   It grows in mountains and open country and is the shoot of cheonma. Its shoot is a single stalk like an arrow shaft with leaves at the tip, and both shaft and leaves are red, and so it is called jeokjeon (赤箭, red arrow).

   HomiclubThe cheonma stalk carries only scale-like reduced leaves, and the whole stem runs from tan to reddish. It has no green because it does not photosynthesize, drawing its nourishment instead from fungal threads.

4. 三月四月採苗, 暴乾. 此草有風不動, 無風則自搖. 《本草》

   Gather the shoots in the third and fourth months and dry them in the sun. This plant does not move when there is wind, and sways of itself when there is none. 《Boncho (本草)》

5. 此物治風, 苗爲赤箭, 有自表入裏之功. 根爲天麻, 有自內達外之理. 《丹心》

   When this material treats wind, its shoot is jeokjeon and has the merit of entering from the exterior inward, while its root is cheonma and follows the principle of reaching from within outward. 《Dansim (丹心)》
