Pilbal is the dried fruit spike of a pepper-family vine. It is the long pepper now returning to spice shelves: about the size of a little finger, blackish with a green cast. The Donguibogam lists it in the herb section marked 【唐】, brought in from China.

  1. 性大溫, 味辛, 無毒. 除胃冷陰疝痃癖. 治霍亂, 冷氣心痛, 血氣. 消食, 殺腥氣.

    Its nature is greatly warm, its taste pungent, and it is non-toxic. It removes cold in the stomach, eumsan (陰疝, genital hernia), and hyeonbyeok (痃癖, cord-like abdominal masses). It treats cholera-like disorder, heart pain from cold qi, and blood-qi disorders. It digests food and kills fishy odour.

    HomiclubPilbal is the dried fruiting spike of a pepper-family vine, known today as long pepper and returning to use as a spice. Being a true relative of black pepper, its tiny drupes are packed onto a single spike that looks like a small finger.

  2. 生南方, 如小指大, 靑黑色. 九月收採, 灰殺暴乾. 《本草》

    It grows in the south, is about the size of a little finger, and is a blackish green. It is gathered in the ninth month, killed with ash, and dried in the sun. 《Boncho (本草)》

  3. 去挺, 醋浸一宿, 焙乾用之. 《入門》

    Remove the stalk, steep it in vinegar overnight, then dry it over gentle heat for use. 《Immun (入門)》
