食茱萸 Siksuyu(suyunamu Yeolmae) (식수유(수유나무 열매))

Siksuyu is the fruit of a tree in the prickly-ash group. The Donguibogam sorts it from its close relative osuyu by eye: siksuyu has plump berries that turn from yellow toward black with age and a thin, split husk, while osuyu berries stay small, tight and green.

It governs naengbi (冷痺, cold impediment) and weakness of the lower back and legs. It rouses yang, and it destroys toothache from worm-eaten teeth, the samchung (三蟲, three worms) in the intestines, and the venom of noxious insects.

HomiclubSiksuyu is the fruit of a tree in the prickly-ash group. The rue family holds sancho, chopi, evodia, and siksuyu together, and the old records frequently confused them with one another.

It addresses jangpung (腸風, intestinal wind) and haemorrhoids, dispels heoraeng (虛冷, deficiency cold), and addresses sugi (水氣, water qi).

It is found everywhere. Its use is the same as evodia, only slightly inferior.

The one with large grains that turn yellow-black with age is siksuyu. The one with tight, small grains that take on a blue-green colour with age is precisely evodia. 《Boncho (本草)》

HomiclubThe two fruits are told apart by grain size and by the colour they take on with age, a practical clue from a time when dried material had to be judged by eye alone. The same features are still checked when examining prickly-ash fruits.

It is also said that the one with thin skin and a gaping mouth is siksuyu. 《Boncho (本草)》
