Original, read line by line 東醫寶鑑 · Tangaek — Decoctions vol. 3

Slightly cold in nature, pungent and bitter in taste, and non-toxic. Its cool quality gently clears heat without harming the body.

It dissolves hardened masses in the abdomen and stagnant blood. Breaking up long-stuck blood is its core strength.

It treats blocked menstruation in women, lingering bleeding with lower-back pain, and helps deliver a retained placenta after childbirth.

It addresses all kinds of postpartum blood disorders, treats abscesses and sores, draws out pus, and disperses bruising from blunt injuries.

This refers to the root of the peony flower. The roots beneath the familiar showy blossoms are what become the medicine.

Wild mountain-grown peony is used, and single-petaled varieties are best. The simpler wild form outperforms the ornately bred double-flowered cultivars.

Roots are gathered in the second and eighth lunar months, split with a copper knife to remove the woody core, and dried in the shade. Avoiding iron blades and direct sunlight is the traditional preparation. From Bencao.

It enters the Foot Shaoyin kidney channel and the Hand Jueyin pericardium channel. In meridian theory, its action reaches around the kidneys and the heart.

It treats steaming bone heat that comes without sweating. It suits chronic low-grade fevers that feel as if the body is drying out from within.

It can drain the hidden fire lodged within the yin layers of the body. It addresses deep heat that smolders inside rather than showing on the surface.

It is mixed with wine and steamed before use. Wine processing lifts and spreads its action so it moves the blood more effectively.

The white-barked kind tonifies, while the red-barked kind unblocks. Even within the same herb, color determines use, so it must be matched to the condition. From Ipmun.
