牽牛子 Napalkkotssi (나팔꽃씨)

Original, read line by line 東醫寶鑑 · Tangaek — Decoctions vol. 3

1. 性寒, 味苦, 有毒.

   Its nature is cold, its taste bitter, and it is toxic.

2. 主下氣.

   It chiefly descends qi.

3. 治水腫, 除風毒, 利大小便, 下冷膿, 瀉蠱毒, 落胎.

   It treats water swelling, removes wind toxin, promotes urination and defecation, brings down cold pus, purges godok (gu poisoning), and drops the foetus.

4. 白者名白丑, 黑者名黑丑.

   The white kind is called baekchuk (白丑) and the black kind heukchuk (黑丑).

   Homiclub丑 is the zodiac character for the ox, so these names pair with 牽牛, 'leading an ox'.

5. 此藥始出田野, 人牽牛易藥, 故以名之.

   This medicine first came out of the fields, and a man led an ox to trade for it, which is why it is so named.

6. 九月後收子. 《本草》

   The seeds are collected after the ninth month. 《Boncho (Materia Medica)》

   HomiclubThis is the morning glory, which opens at dawn in summer and closes by midday. A round capsule forms where the flower fell, and when it dries in autumn it yields black or white seeds.

7. 瀉氣中之濕熱, 以氣藥引之則入氣, 以大黃引之則入血.

   It purges damp-heat within the qi; led by qi medicines it enters the qi, and led by daehwang (rhubarb) it enters the blood.

8. 有黑白二種, 白屬金, 黑屬水.

   There are two kinds, black and white; the white belongs to metal and the black to water.

9. 其性烈而善走, 比諸辛藥尤甚.

   Its nature is fierce and quick to travel, more so even than the other pungent medicines.

10. 以酒拌蒸三時, 炒熟, 每一斤搗, 取頭末四兩用, 生者尤急. 《入門》

    Mixed with liquor, steamed for three sijin (about six hours), then roasted through; for each geun (catty) it is pounded and the first four nyang (taels) of powder are taken and used. The raw seed acts even more urgently. 《Immun (Introduction to Medicine)》
