Goehwa is the dried flower and flower bud of the Chinese scholar tree. A large tree once planted at village entrances and in palace courtyards, its yellow blossoms also served as a dye. Donguibogam noted that it was lightly roasted before use and went by the second name goea.

治五痔心痛, 殺腹藏蟲, 幷腸風瀉血, 幷赤白痢, 凉大腸熱.
It treats the ochi (五痔, five haemorrhoids) and heart pain, kills worms in the abdomen, and likewise treats bleeding from jangpung (腸風) and jeokbaengni (赤白痢, red and white dysentery), and it cools heat in the large intestine.
HomiclubGoehwa is the dried flower and bud of the scholar tree. In summer the branch tips carry masses of yellow-white pea-shaped blossoms, and the buds were also used as a yellow dye.
