椒目 Chomok (초목)

Chomok is the black seed inside the fruit of the Korean pepper tree. The pungent husk becomes the chopi powder shaken over loach stew, while the seed was separated out and given this name of its own. The text says it was lightly roasted before use.

Original, read line by line 東醫寶鑑 · Tangaek — Decoctions vol. 3

  1. 性寒, 味苦, 無毒一云小毒. 治十二種水氣, 能行水, 利小便. 治水蠱. 《本草》

    Its nature is cold and its taste bitter, and it is non-toxic, though one account calls the toxicity slight. It treats the twelve kinds of sugi (水氣, water qi), moves water well, and promotes urination. It treats sugo (水蠱, water swelling of the belly). 《Boncho (本草)》

    HomiclubChomok is the glossy black seed inside the fruit of the Korean pepper tree covered in the preceding entry. The pungent husk becomes jepi powder, while the seed was separated out and given this name.

  2. 此藥只行滲道, 不行穀道, 所以下水最速.

    This medicine travels only by the samdo (滲道, seeping route) and not by the gokdo (穀道, grain route), and that is why it drains water most swiftly.
