Original, read line by line 東醫寶鑑 · Tangaek — Decoctions vol. 3

Its nature is neutral, though some say slightly cold; the taste is bitter and sweet, and it is non-toxic.

It treats abscesses and ulcers, carbuncles on the back, scrofula, intestinal bleeding, fistulas, facial eruptions, contusions, and wounds from blades or arrows, while regenerating flesh and relieving pain.

It is also applied externally to swellings, toxic sores, and burns from boiling water or fire.

It grows as a vine, with five leaflets clustered at the tip of each branch.

The roots resemble those of asparagus fern; over ten thick roots cluster beneath a single plant, with reddish-black skin and white flesh.

The roots are harvested in the second and eighth lunar months and sun-dried for storage. From the Bencao.

There is a related herb called jeongnyeom, or red baengnyeom.

Its functions and form are the same as baengnyeom, differing only in that both its skin and inner flesh are red. From the Yimun.
