Chulchok is sorghum, written syusyu in the old Korean gloss. It is the same susu as in the crop guide, the tallest of the grains, with big and plentiful kernels, sown in the north as a hedge against a failed harvest. The same passage runs on into barnyard millet and poppy seed.

穀之最長, 米粒亦大而多者.
It is the tallest of the grains, and its kernels too are large and many.
HomiclubChulchok is sorghum. An annual grass, it grows well above head height and carries a dense reddish head of grain at the top of the stalk. It goes into susu-bukkumi pancakes and susu-patteok today.

北地種之, 以備缺粮, 否則喂牛馬.
In the northern lands it is planted against a shortage of provisions; otherwise it is fed to oxen and horses.
