瓜蔞根 Haneultarippuri (하늘타리뿌리)

1. 性寒, 味苦, 無毒. 主消渴, 身熱煩滿.

   Its nature is cold, its taste bitter, and it is non-toxic. It chiefly addresses wasting thirst and fever with vexation and fullness.

   HomiclubGwarugeun is the root of the Chinese snake gourd, a perennial cucurbit vine of the hill slopes. In autumn its round orange fruits hang from the vine and are easy to spot.

2. 除腸胃中痼熱, 八疸身面黃, 脣乾口燥. 通小腸, 排膿, 消腫毒.

   It removes entrenched heat in the intestines and stomach, yellowing of body and face from the paldal (八疸, eight jaundices), and dry lips and parched mouth. It frees the small intestine, expels pus, and disperses swelling toxin.

3. 療乳癰發背, 痔瘻瘡癤, 通月水, 消撲損瘀血.

   It addresses breast abscess and back abscess, fistulas, sores, and boils; it frees the menses and disperses static blood from a blow or injury.

4. 一名天花粉, 生原野, 處處有之. 一名果臝, 一名天瓜. 其根, 惟歲久入土深者, 佳. 《本草》

   It is also called cheonhwabun (天花粉, heaven-flower powder), grows in open fields, and is found everywhere. It is also called gwara (果臝) and cheongwa (天瓜). As for its root, only one aged over years and running deep into the soil is fine. 《Boncho (本草)》

   HomiclubCheonhwabun names the white starch settled out of the ground root in water, and a later entry, bun (粉), gives the method for making it. The root swells thick and fleshy like a sweet potato.

5. 天花粉, 治消渴聖藥也. 《丹心》

   Cheonhwabun is a sagely medicine for treating wasting thirst. 《Dansim (丹心)》
