橘皮 귤피 (귤피)

性溫一云煖, 味苦辛, 無毒.
성온일운난, 미고신, 무독.
Its nature is warm (some say hot), the taste is bitter and pungent, and it has no toxicity.

能治胸膈間氣, 開胃止痢, 消痰涎.
능치흉격간기, 개위지리, 소담연.
It treats stagnant qi between the chest and diaphragm, stimulates appetite, stops dysentery, and dissolves phlegm and saliva.

主上氣咳嗽.
주상기해수.
It is effective for treating coughs caused by qi rising upward.

止嘔逆, 利水穀道.
지구역, 이수곡도.
It calms nausea and vomiting, and helps regulate the passages of water and food, namely urination and bowel movement.

木高一二丈, 葉與枳無別, 刺生莖間.
목고일이장, 엽여지무별, 자생경간.
The tree grows about one or two jang tall, its leaves are nearly indistinguishable from those of the trifoliate orange, and thorns sprout along the branches.

夏初生白花, 六七月而成實, 至冬黃熟, 乃可啖.
하초생백화, 육칠월이성실, 지동황숙, 내가담.
It blooms white flowers in early summer, bears fruit around the sixth and seventh months, and ripens to a golden yellow by winter, at which point it becomes edible.

十月採, 以陳者爲良. 生南方. 《本草》
시월채, 이진자위량. 생남방. 《본초》
It is harvested in the tenth month, and the older the peel the better; it grows in the southern regions. From the Bencao.

我國惟産濟州, 其靑橘柚子柑子皆産焉. 《俗方》
아국유산제주, 기청귤유자감자개산언. 《속방》
In our country it grows only on Jeju Island, where green tangerines, yuzu, and mandarins are all produced together. From the Sokbang.

補脾胃, 不去白. 若理胸中滯氣, 須去白.
보비위, 불거백. 약리흉중체기, 수거백.
To tonify the spleen and stomach, leave the white inner pith intact; but to clear stagnant qi in the chest, the white pith must be removed.

色紅, 故名紅皮, 日久者佳, 故名陳皮.
색홍, 고명홍피, 일구자가, 고명진피.
Because its color is red, it is called hongpi (red peel); and because the aged ones are best, it is called chenpi (aged peel).

留白者, 補胃和中, 去白者, 消痰泄氣.
유백자, 보위화중, 거백자, 소담설기.
When the white pith is kept, it tonifies the stomach and harmonizes the middle burner; when removed, it dissolves phlegm and disperses qi.

有白朮則補脾胃, 無白朮則瀉脾胃.
유백출즉보비위, 무백출즉사비위.
Used together with baekchul (Atractylodes), it tonifies the spleen and stomach; used alone without it, it instead drains them.

有甘草則補肺, 無甘草則瀉肺. 《丹心》
유감초즉보폐, 무감초즉사폐. 《단심》
With licorice it tonifies the lungs; without licorice it drains them. From the Danxin.

入下焦, 用鹽水浸. 肺燥者, 童尿浸, 曬用. 《入門》
입하초, 용염수침. 폐조자, 동뇨침, 쇄용. 《입문》
To direct its action to the lower burner, soak it in salt water; for those with dry lungs, soak it in young boy's urine and dry it in the sun before use. From the Ipmun.

Its nature is cold, and its taste is both sweet and sour.

It relieves excessive thirst (the wasting-thirst condition) and stimulates the appetite.

This refers precisely to the inner pulp wrapped within the tangerine peel.

불가다식, 영인다담.
It should not be eaten in excess, as it causes phlegm to accumulate in the body.

酸者聚痰, 甛者潤肺.
산자취담, 첨자윤폐.
The sour ones gather phlegm, while the sweet ones moisten the lungs.

The peel is suitable for medicinal use, but the flesh is not particularly beneficial to people. From the Bencao.

It treats thirst and the vomiting that follows the drinking of alcohol.
