Original, read line by line

Its nature is cold, its taste sweet, and it is non-toxic. The cold nature clears heat while the sweetness gently nourishes the body.

It is used chiefly for impotence caused by depleted yang energy.

It strengthens sinews and bones, supports yang energy, restores exhaustion, warms the lower back and knees, brightens the complexion, fills out the skin, and clears the eyes — a remedy that nourishes the whole body.

It grows everywhere, and its bark is what people strip to make paper — the very same dak tree familiar as the source of Korean hanji paper.

The one with mottled bark is called jeo, while the one with white bark is called gok. Though similar, the two are distinguished by bark color.

It is also said that the one with lobed leaves is jeo, and the one without lobes is gok — another way to tell them apart.

The fruit is gathered in the eighth and ninth lunar months and sun-dried — late autumn being the proper season for harvest. 《Bencao》

Soak the fruit in water and skim off any that float, steam the sound ones after soaking in wine, then dry them over gentle heat before use — proper processing is said to draw out its full effect. 《Ipmun》

  9. On the use of the leaves.

The leaves treat stabbing wind-rashes, body itch, and stubborn sores. They promote new flesh, and a decoction can be used as a medicinal bath — a useful remedy for those plagued by itching skin. 《Bencao》

    수피

On the use of the bark.

The bark treats edema and abdominal distension. It drives out retained fluids and promotes urination — a valuable remedy for swelling. 《Bencao》

    저지

On the use of paper made from the paper mulberry.

Burn the paper to ash and take it mixed with wine. It is said to stop the dizziness from blood loss, abnormal uterine bleeding, and incessant bleeding from sword wounds — even the paper becomes medicine, so not a part of the tree goes to waste. 《Ipmun》
