楮實 닥나무 열매 (저실)

性寒, 味甘, 無毒.
성한, 미감, 무독.
Its nature is cold, its taste sweet, and it is non-toxic. The cold nature clears heat while the sweetness gently nourishes the body.

主陰痿.
주음위.
It is used chiefly for impotence caused by depleted yang energy.

壯筋骨, 助陽氣, 補虛勞, 煖腰膝, 益顔色, 充肌膚, 明目.
장근골, 조양기, 보허로, 난요슬, 익안색, 충기부, 명목.
It strengthens sinews and bones, supports yang energy, restores exhaustion, warms the lower back and knees, brightens the complexion, fills out the skin, and clears the eyes — a remedy that nourishes the whole body.

處處有之, 取皮以作紙者.
처처유지, 취피이작지자.
It grows everywhere, and its bark is what people strip to make paper — the very same dak tree familiar as the source of Korean hanji paper.

皮斑者是楮, 皮白者是穀.
피반자시저, 피백자시곡.
The one with mottled bark is called jeo, while the one with white bark is called gok. Though similar, the two are distinguished by bark color.

又曰, 葉有瓣曰楮, 無瓣曰穀.
우왈, 엽유판왈저, 무판왈곡.
It is also said that the one with lobed leaves is jeo, and the one without lobes is gok — another way to tell them apart.

八月九月採實, 暴乾. 《本草》

The fruit is gathered in the eighth and ninth lunar months and sun-dried — late autumn being the proper season for harvest. 《Bencao》

水浸去浮, 酒浸蒸, 焙乾用. 《入門》
수침거부, 주침증, 배건용. 《입문》
Soak the fruit in water and skim off any that float, steam the sound ones after soaking in wine, then dry them over gentle heat before use — proper processing is said to draw out its full effect. 《Ipmun》

The leaves treat stabbing wind-rashes, body itch, and stubborn sores. They promote new flesh, and a decoction can be used as a medicinal bath — a useful remedy for those plagued by itching skin. 《Bencao》

The bark treats edema and abdominal distension. It drives out retained fluids and promotes urination — a valuable remedy for swelling. 《Bencao》

燒灰, 酒調服. 能止血暈, 血崩, 金瘡出血不止. 《入門》
소회, 주조복. 능지혈훈, 혈붕, 금창출혈부지. 《입문》
Burn the paper to ash and take it mixed with wine. It is said to stop the dizziness from blood loss, abnormal uterine bleeding, and incessant bleeding from sword wounds — even the paper becomes medicine, so not a part of the tree goes to waste. 《Ipmun》
