蓮實 연밥 (연실)

性平寒, 味甘, 無毒.
성평한, 미감, 무독.
Its nature is neutral leaning cool, the taste sweet, and it carries no toxicity.

養氣力, 除百疾, 補五藏, 止渴, 止痢, 益神安心.
양기력, 제백질, 보오장, 지갈, 지리, 익신안심.
It nourishes vitality, dispels myriad ailments, tonifies the five viscera, relieves thirst and dysentery, and calms the spirit.

多食令人喜. 《本草》
다식령인희. 《본초》
Eating a generous amount lifts the mood, as recorded in the Bencao.

補十二經氣血. 《入門》
보십이경기혈. 《입문》
It replenishes the qi and blood of all twelve meridians, the Ipmun records.

一名水芝丹, 一名瑞蓮, 亦謂之藕實.
일명수지단, 일명서련, 역위지우실.
It is also called sujidan or seoryeon, and likewise known as uisil.

其皮黑而沈水者, 謂之石蓮.
기피흑이침수자, 위지석련.
When the husk is black and sinks beneath the water, it is called seokryeon, the stone lotus.

入水必沈, 惟煎鹽鹵能浮之.
입수필침, 유전염로능부지.
Placed in water it always sinks; only boiling brine can make it float.

處處有之, 生池澤中.
처처유지, 생지택중.
It grows everywhere, taking root in ponds and marshes.

八月九月, 取堅黑者.
팔월구월, 취견흑자.
Harvest the firm, blackened seeds in the eighth and ninth lunar months.

用生則脹人腹中, 蒸食之良. 《本草》
용생즉창인복중, 증식지량. 《본초》
Eaten raw it bloats the belly, so the Bencao advises steaming first.

其葉爲荷, 其莖爲茄, 其本爲蔤.
기엽위하, 기경위가, 기본위밀.
The leaf is named ha, the stalk ga, and the rhizome base mil.

其花未發爲菡萏, 已發爲芙蓉,
기화미발위함담, 이발위부용,
The unopened bud is called handam, while the fully bloomed flower is buyong.

其實爲蓮, 其根爲藕, 其中爲的,
기실위련, 기근위우, 기중위적,
The fruit is yeon, the root u, and the kernel within is called jeok.

的中有靑長二分爲薏, 味苦者是也.
적중유청장이분위의, 미고자시야.
At the center of jeok sits a green sprout about two fen long called ui, the bitter part of the seed.

Bugeo is the umbrella term for all these parts, according to the Bencao.

For medicinal use, white lotus seed is the finest, the Iryong notes.

It stops the vomiting of blood and disperses stagnant blood clots.

Eaten raw it eases the deficient thirst that follows acute gastroenteritis.

蒸食, 甚補五藏, 實下焦.
증식, 심보오장, 실하초.
Steamed, it strongly tonifies the five viscera and firms up the lower jiao.

與蜜同食, 令人腹藏肥, 不生諸蟲.
여밀동식, 영인복장비, 불생제충.
Taken together with honey, it enriches the belly and keeps various parasites from arising.

除煩, 止泄, 解酒毒, 壓食, 及病後熱渴.
제번, 지설, 해주독, 압식, 급병후열갈.
It clears vexing heat, halts diarrhea, resolves alcohol toxicity, eases food stagnation, and quenches the fever-thirst that follows illness.

節性冷, 解熱毒, 消瘀血.
절성냉, 해열독, 소어혈.
The root nodes are cool in nature, neutralizing heat toxins and dispersing blood stasis.

昔宋太官, 誤削藕皮, 落羊血中, 其䘓不成.
석송태관, 오삭우피, 락양혈중, 기감불성.
Long ago a Song palace cook accidentally let a lotus peel fall into sheep's blood, and the blood would no longer congeal.

From this it was understood that lotus root truly disperses blood, the Bencao records.

하엽
Hayeop, the leaf of the lotus.

止渴, 落胞, 殺蕈毒.
지갈, 락포, 살심독.
It quenches thirst, aids the delivery of the placenta, and neutralizes mushroom poisoning.

主血脹腹痛.
주혈창복통.
It treats abdominal swelling and pain caused by blood congestion.

荷鼻, 性平, 味苦, 無毒.
하비, 성평, 미고, 무독.
Habi is neutral in nature, bitter in taste, and free of toxicity.

主血痢. 安胎, 去惡血,
주혈리. 안태, 거악혈,
It treats bloody dysentery, settles the fetus, and clears away foul blood.

It is the leafstalk base of the lotus leaf, and is called habi in the Bencao.

Yeonhwa, the lotus blossom itself.

Warm in nature and non-toxic.

It calms the heart, lightens the body, and preserves a youthful complexion.

Blended into incense, its fragrance turns wonderfully fine.

Also called buljwasu, it refers to the lotus stamen, the Jeongjeon notes.

The lotus stamen astringes essence and qi so they are not lost, the Ipmun records.

Yeon-ui, the green germ inside the lotus seed, also called yeonsim.

The green sprout lodged at the center of the seed kernel is what is called ui.

Its taste is intensely bitter, and reckless consumption can bring on acute gastroenteritis, the Bencao warns.
