菰根 줄풀 뿌리 (고근)

  1. 性大寒, 味甘, 無毒.

    성대한, 미감, 무독.

    Its nature is very cold, its taste sweet, and it carries no toxicity, making it well suited for cooling internal heat.

  2. 主腸胃痼熱,

    주장위고열,

    It is chiefly used to treat chronic, deep-seated heat lodged in the stomach and intestines.

  3. 止消渴,

    지소갈,

    It relieves the unquenchable thirst of xiaoke syndrome, which corresponds to the chronic thirst seen in diabetes today.

  4. 除目黃,

    제목황,

    It clears the yellowing of the eyes that accompanies jaundice.

  5. 利大小便.

    이대소변.

    It promotes the smooth passage of both urine and stool, helping the body clear out waste.

  6. 止熱痢.

    지열리.

    It halts dysentery and diarrhea caused by accumulated heat.

  7. 療酒㾴面赤.

    요주사면적.

    It treats rosacea-like flushing and the red, roughened nose brought on by drinking.

  8. 然滑中, 不可多食.

    연활중, 불가다식.

    That said, it loosens the bowels, so it should not be taken in large amounts.

  9. 生水中, 葉如蔗荻,

    생수중, 엽여자적,

    It grows in water, and its leaves resemble those of sugarcane or reeds.

  10. 久根盤厚.

    구근반후.

    Long-established roots coil and thicken into a dense mat.

  11. 夏月生菌堪食, 名菰菜.

    하월생균감식, 명고채.

    In summer it sends up tender shoots fit to eat, called guchae — known today as the jiaobai vegetable used in Chinese cooking.

  12. 三年已上, 中心生白臺如藕,

    삼년이상, 중심생백대여우,

    Plants more than three years old send up a white, lotus-root-like stalk from their center.

  13. 白軟堪啖. 名菰首.

    백연감담. 명고수.

    It is white and tender enough to eat raw, and it goes by the name gosu.

  14. 至秋結實, 乃彫胡米, 可作飯.

    지추결실, 내조호미, 가작반.

    In autumn it bears grain called diaohu rice, which can be cooked into a meal — once counted among the six esteemed grains of old China.
