常山 조팝나무뿌리 (상산)

Original, read line by line 東醫寶鑑 · 탕액편 권3

1. 性寒, 味苦辛, 有毒.

   성한, 미고신, 유독.

   Its nature is cold, the taste bitter and pungent, and it carries toxicity.

2. 治諸瘧, 吐痰涎, 去寒熱.

   치제학, 토담연, 거한열.

   It treats all forms of malarial fevers, induces the discharge of phlegm and saliva, and relieves alternating chills and fevers.

3. 處處有之, 卽蜀漆根也.

   처처유지, 즉촉칠근야.

   It grows in many places, and is in fact the root of the plant known as shuqi.

4. 八月採根, 陰乾.

   팔월채근, 음건.

   The root is gathered in the eighth lunar month and dried in the shade away from direct sunlight.

5. 細實黃者, 呼爲雞骨常山, 最勝.《本草》

   세실황자, 호위계골상산, 최승.《본초》

   The slender, firm, and yellow specimens are called "chicken-bone changshan" and are prized as the finest grade. (Bencao)

6. 性暴悍, 善驅逐, 能傷眞氣, 不可多用, 令人大吐.《丹心》

   성폭한, 선구축, 능상진기, 불가다용, 영인대토.《단심》

   Its action is violent and fierce, excellent at expelling pathogens, yet it can injure the true vital energy, so it must not be used in large doses lest it cause severe vomiting. (Danxin)

7. 生用令人大吐, 酒浸一宿, 蒸熟或炒, 或醋浸煮熟, 則善化痞而不吐.《入門》

   생용영인대토, 주침일숙, 증숙혹초, 혹초침자숙, 즉선화비이불토.《입문》

   Used raw it provokes violent vomiting, but if steeped in wine overnight and then steamed or roasted, or steeped in vinegar and boiled until done, it dissolves abdominal masses well without causing vomiting. (Rumen)

8. 蜀漆

   촉칠

   What follows concerns shuqi, the aerial part of the same plant.

9. 卽常山苗也.

   즉상산묘야.

   Shuqi refers to the young sprouts and leaves of the changshan plant.

10. 五月採葉, 日乾.

    오월채엽, 일건.

    The leaves are picked in the fifth lunar month and dried in the sun.

11. 治瘴鬼瘧, 能吐出之.

    치장귀학, 능토출지.

    It treats miasmic and so-called "ghost-malaria" fevers by drawing out the pathogen through induced vomiting.

12. 甘草水蒸二次, 曬乾用.《入門》

    감초수증이차, 쇄건용.《입문》

    It is steamed twice in licorice decoction and then sun-dried before use, which tempers its harshness. (Rumen)
