Its nature is neutral, though some sources call it warm. The taste is pungent (others say sweet), and it carries no toxicity.

It chiefly brightens the eyes and dispels injuries caused by wind, as recorded in the Bencao.

It treats swellings from wind-toxin, opens the throat and diaphragm, moistens the lungs while dispersing qi, and heals hives and sores arising from wind-heat. So says the Tangye Bencao.

This is none other than the seed of the burdock plant we commonly know.

It grows everywhere, and its spiny husk clings to any mouse that brushes past so firmly that it cannot be shaken off. For this reason the Bencao also calls it shuzhanzi, meaning the seed that sticks to mice.

Lightly roast the seeds, then pound them into fragments before use, as the Yixue Rumen recommends.

It is also called daliuzi, the great-strength seed, a name preserved in the Yixue Zhengchuan.

What follows concerns the root and stem of the burdock plant.

They treat cold damage, facial swelling from wind stroke, unquenchable thirst known as xiaoke, and the burning inner heat called rezhong, according to the Bencao.
