萊菔 (내복)

  1. 性溫一云冷, 一云平, 味辛甘, 無毒.

    성온일운냉, 일운평, 미신감, 무독.

    Its nature is warm — some say cool, others say neutral. The taste is pungent and sweet, with no toxicity.

  2. 消食, 去痰癖, 止消渴, 利關節, 練五藏惡氣.

    소식, 거담벽, 지소갈, 이관절, 연오장악기.

    It aids digestion, clears phlegm lodged in the chest, quenches thirst, eases the joints, and disperses harmful qi from the five organs.

  3. 治肺痿吐血, 勞瘦咳嗽.

    치폐위토혈, 노수해수.

    It treats lung wasting with blood-spitting, as well as the dry cough that comes with consumptive emaciation.

  4. 處處種之, 常食之菜也.

    처처종지, 상식지채야.

    It is planted everywhere and eaten daily — a vegetable always on the table.

  5. 此物下氣最速, 久服澁榮衛, 令鬚髮早白.

    차물하기최속, 구복삽영위, 영수발조백.

    Nothing brings qi downward faster than this; yet long-term overuse dulls the circulation of nourishing and defensive qi, turning beard and hair white before their time.

  6. 俗名蘿葍, 亦曰蘆菔, 以能制來麰麪毒, 故亦名萊菔. 《本草》

    속명나복, 역왈노복, 이능제내모면독, 고역명내복. 《본초》

    Commonly called nabok, also called nobok. Because it can neutralize the harmful effects of barley and wheat flour, it is also named naebok. 《Bencao》

    On the seed — known as nabokja, the radish seed.

  8. 治膨脹積聚, 利五藏及大小二便.

    치팽창적취, 이오장급대소이변.

    It treats abdominal distension and inner masses, opens the five organs, and frees both bowel and bladder.

  9. 又硏末飮服, 吐風痰甚效.

    우연말음복, 토풍담심효.

    Ground fine and taken with water, it is highly effective in expelling wind-phlegm through vomiting.

  10. 菘子黑, 蔓菁子紫赤, 大小相似.

    숭자흑, 만청자자적, 대소상사.

    Cabbage seed is black, turnip seed a purplish red, and the two are close in size.

  11. 惟蘿葍子黃赤色, 大數倍, 復不圓也. 《本草》

    유나복자황적색, 대수배, 부불원야. 《본초》

    Only the radish seed is a yellowish red, several times larger, and not quite round — easy to tell apart at a glance. 《Bencao》
