  1. 性微寒, 味甘辛, 無毒.

    성미한, 미감신, 무독.

    It is slightly cold in nature, sweet and pungent in taste, and free of toxicity—gentle enough to cool heat without overstimulating the body.

  2. 治一切勞,

    치일체로,

    It treats all forms of consumptive exhaustion, helping to restore a body worn down by overwork and depletion.

  3. 下一切氣,

    하일체기,

    It descends all forms of upward-rising qi, easing the stagnant pressure that builds up in the chest.

  4. 療痰滿胸脇,

    요담만흉협,

    It relieves the heavy, congested feeling that comes when phlegm fills the chest and flanks, lightening labored breathing.

  5. 中痞,

    중비,

    It opens up the blocked, stuffed sensation lodged just below the chest, where food and qi often stagnate.

  6. 心腹結氣,

    심복결기,

    It disperses knotted qi that gathers in the chest and abdomen, untangling the tight, balled-up sensation inside.

  7. 去痰實,

    거담실,

    It clears away dense, accumulated phlegm—the thick, sticky kind that lingers rather than the loose, watery sort.

  8. 下氣止嗽,

    하기지수,

    By descending the qi, it calms persistent coughing, especially the kind tied to phlegm and chest congestion.

  9. 開胃下食.

    개위하식.

    It revives appetite and helps food pass downward, restoring digestion that had been smothered by chest congestion.

  10. 處處有之.

    처처유지.

    It grows commonly here and there, a familiar wild herb that people could easily gather from the nearby hills and fields.

  11. 二月八月採根,

    이월팔월채근,

    The root is dug in the second and eighth lunar months, when its medicinal essence is richest—just before spring growth and as autumn settles in.

  12. 暴乾用之. 《本草》

    폭건용지. 《본초》

    It is dried thoroughly in the sun before use, according to the Bencao—a simple preparation that locks in the root's potency for later decoction.
