Plants Have a Backup Plan for Heat

The hotter it gets, the more we learn about how plants sense temperature

When your lettuce suddenly bolts and the leaves turn bitter, that's the garden telling you the heat has arrived. But the changes you can see are only half the story. Inside the plant's cells, a whole sensing system is registering that heat and quietly redirecting how the plant grows.

How Plants Feel the Heat

Plant cells contain light receptors called phytochromes. These receptors read the wavelengths of light around them — and they respond to shifts in temperature at the same time. When the air warms, part of the phytochrome molecule changes shape, and that change travels through the cell as a heat signal. Acting on it, the plant may broaden its leaves, flower earlier than usual, or reschedule when it sets seed.

Phytochromes aren't the only heat sensors on the job, though. A research team at the University of Mississippi found that plants still respond to rising temperatures even when this primary sensing pathway is shut down — which means a second, backup pathway has to be running alongside it.

What Happens When the Main Pathway Goes Quiet

When the researchers suppressed phytochrome function and then turned up the heat, the plants still adjusted their growth in response. The mechanism behind it involves a secondary pathway tied to heat shock proteins. As certain proteins inside the cell begin to deform under heat, that distortion becomes its own signal, one that regulates gene expression through a separate route entirely.

This backup pathway usually stays out of sight. It sits idle while the main sensing system is working normally, then switches on when temperatures spike sharply or when the primary pathway can't do its job. Having two systems working in tandem lets plants handle a much wider range of temperature conditions than either could alone.

What This Means in Your Garden

With summers running hotter year after year, a crop's ability to sense heat translates directly into what you harvest. Two varieties can face the same heat wave and come out looking completely different — one with scorched leaves and blossoms dropping early, the other holding steady. Differences at this molecular level may be part of why.

The researchers believe that understanding this backup pathway could help breeders develop and select varieties that hold up better in extreme heat. It's not ready to apply to breeding programs just yet, but working out how plants respond to rising temperatures lays the groundwork that agriculture and food production will need.

Meanwhile, there's plenty you can do in your own beds during a heat wave. Water early in the morning to bring the soil surface temperature down. Mulching to hold soil temperature steady shortens the window in which your crops sit under heat stress. Trust your plants' own heat response — but manage the growing conditions so that response never gets overwhelmed. That balance is the heart of summer garden care.

Try this today: On a morning when a heat wave is forecast, put your hand on the soil surface before you water. If it's hot to the touch, start by adding a layer of straw or landscape fabric as mulch.
